Plant Relocation (Project & Construction Management)
A local customer needed to move an existing plant from Italy to their Louisville site. An Italian contractor dismantled and shipped the equipment, while VITOK provided all of the engineering services necessary to erect the plant inside of an existing building. The project included all new piping and ductwork. The plant relocation was completed on schedule and within budget, even though there were very few existing equipment drawings.
Plant Expansion (Chemical/Process Engineering)
Another client wanted to relocate production capacity from northern Illinois to its Kentucky plant. VITOK was asked to provide engineering design for three separate chemical facilities for the site. The facilities were grass roots and involved reactors and liquid handling, recovery systems, a distillation and a purification column, grinding and powder handling, utilities and a warehouse. VITOK also provided the customer with capital cost estimates for the various facilities.
Automated Print Cylinder Storage (Civil/Structural Engineering)
Plant personnel were having problems with a system designed to store print cylinders.
The system was intended to be primarily automatic, with little operator intervention
required. Since VITOK was all ready on site doing other project work, our customer
asked us to investigate this system. The storage system was generating numerous
control faults, and required much operator intervention. VITOK researched the
problem, recommended controls modifications, coordinated the work of various
subcontractors, and supervised field-testing. The system is now working with
a high degree of reliability.
Plant Relief Valve Study (Mechanical Engineering/Systems)
Owners of an ammonia plant wanted to increase their production rate by a factor of 33%. This required, among other things, a study of the plant relief system. VITOK collected data for the existing protective devices, and analyzed their suitability for the increased capacity. Through the successful execution of this project, VITOK was awarded a contract for the review of all other safety systems at the facility.
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System (Instrument/Control Engineering)
A process chemical plant previously had purchased the use of liquid ammonia for
process cooling from a neighboring plant. VITOK was awarded the contract to provide
engineering for the installation of an ammonia refrigeration system on their
site. In addition to providing mechanical, civil/structural, and piping design,
we installed a new control system. This control system automatically starts/stops
and load/unloads refrigeration compressors based on process demand. It also collects
data on the refrigeration system, and provides alarms. Continually monitoring
process requirements and adjusting the load of the compressors reduces electric
utility costs substantially.
Ventilation/HVAC/Mechanical
In order to reduce the amount of airborne chemical contamination within several plant buildings, a customer required redesign of their building and tank ventilation systems. VITOK's redesign included increased air heater requirements, steam piping, fans and ducting, filter ventilation hoods, and batch sampling revisions.
